Pomerol

Location & History

Pomerol is a communal appellation on the right bank of the Dordogne, in the Libournais region (Gironde), just near Libourne.

The vineyard covers about 800 hectares, according to various sources.

The AOC Pomerol was officially recognized in 1936, after being acknowledged as a distinct wine region from 1923.

Terroir & Grape varieties

The soil is very varied but certain elements often recur:
Clay, sometimes “blue” clay; Château du Domaine de Graviers, sands, and pieces of gravel on clay sub‑soils.

What is locally called “crasse de fer”,an iron‑oxide layer giving a distinctive reddish hue to the soil, which contributes to its typicity.

Topography : the vineyard is situated on a plateau with terraces descending towards the Isle valley, which creates variations in exposure and soil depth.

Grape varieties

The dominant grape variety is Merlot: it dominates the plantings.

It is often complemented by Cabernet Franc. You also find, to a lesser extent, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.
